BugFighter

BugFighter is an automated test solution that allows non-developers to compose system test cases and execute these against a system under test.

Automated testing is key in any software development, that wants to claim quality, so we developed BugFighter in order to take our own medicine.

Bugfighter is based on FIT (http://fit.c2.com/ ) originally developed by the great Ward Cunningham. We have humbly added a number of interesting features that allows Bugfighter to function in a heterogenous environment, testing systems with a service oriented architecture.

It is all in Java, and we only use Open Source packages as the foundation.

Principles

Test cases are composed in simple HTML tables that BugFighter can process given the configuration it gets from its config.xml and then test them up against any given System Under Test (SUT).

Once BugFighter gets a result back from SUT that it can compile into a result set it produces a readable result set which also comes as a HTML file that the tester can read and easily use.

The idea is that the use of BugFighter is a cooperation between developer and tester where the developer will provide the tester with tools that lets him write test case for BugFighter.

How to use BugFighter

A normal workflow for BugFighter would look like this:

  • The starting point would be a brainstorm between the tester and developer. Here they would sit down and define the different test templates. They define what kind of input goes into BugFighter, they note their expected results.

From here on tester and developer works in parralel but separately.

  • The tester writes the test cases, runs BugFighter and finally compares the test results with his expected results.
  • The developer writes test templates.

Once you have run an automated test by using BugFighter you should now have a good indicator whether or not your system is working the way you expected.
